Will Power: that's what you have if you write a will! Power to use the accumulated fruits of your lifetime to provide for your loved ones as you see fit, rather than as the government determines. Power to ease the transition of your passing for those who survive you. Moreover, a will is fully revocable while you live.you retain control and can easily make revisions should your circumstances change.

When you include Red Feather Development Group in your will, you.re using your will power to support an organization whose work you believe in. Your bequest will help Red Feather to build a solid funding base that will support our American Indian housing and community development program far into the future.

If you presently have a will, you can easily add a codicil (an amendment to your will) providing for a bequest to Red Feather. If you don't have a will, this is a time to prepare one. It is neither difficult nor expensive.

A bequest to Red Feather brings a tax benefit, too. At your death, your estate is entitled to an estate tax charitable deduction for the full value of your bequest. Because rates for the federal gifts and estate tax go as high as 55%, this deduction can mean significant tax savings for your estate. For example, if you have a taxable estate of $900,000, a $100,000 charitable bequest can save $39,000 in taxes, so the .net cost. of your bequest is only $61,000. (Note: The 1997 tax act increases the amount of noncharitable gifts and bequests that are excluded from gift and estate tax. The increased exclusion will be phased in from the current $600,000 to $1,000,000 over the period 1998 to 2006. Charitable bequests continue to be fully deductible.)

Tailoring your bequest to your needs and goals
Your bequest may take any of several forms. Hear are some examples, with appropriate wording.

A general bequest is for a certain dollar amount of property, usually cash: "I give to Red Feather Development Group, Bozeman, Montana, or any successor organization thereto, the sum of $100,000 ..."

A specific bequest directs that Red Feather is to receive a specific piece of property: "I give... 500 shares of xyz stock ..."

A residual bequest designates all or a portion of whatever remains after all debts, taxes expenses and other bequest have been paid: "I give fifty percent (50%) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate ..."

A contingent bequest takes effect only under certain conditions: "In the event my wife does not survive me, I give -- the sum of " In addition to the choice of form, you also have options as to the purpose for which your bequest will be used. It could be totally unrestricted, allowing us to use it where the need is greatest. It could be designated for a particular program. Another possibility, which we strongly encourage, is to direct that your gift become part of an endowment fund. The principal of the fund would be retained and invested in perpetuity, and only the income would be expended for the benefit of Red Feather.

You may establish a named fund if your bequest is above a certain minimum dollar amount established by Red Feather. The fund could bear your name, the names of you and your spouse, or the name of another family member, friend or colleague. Though commingled with other fund for investment purposes, your fund will be separately identified in Red FeatherUs records.

Here is an example of language creating a named fund: .I give to Red Feather Development Group, Bellevue, Washington or any successor organization thereto, (including the amount of property to be given) to establish the (Donor's Name) Endowed Fund. The income distributed from this endowment shall be used of programs in the area of. (state purpose, if restricted)..

If you have a living trust
Possibly you have created a living trust and transferred many of your assets to it. Although assets within the trust will not be subject to probate, the trust agreement acts like a will in that it will specify the individuals and organizations to receive the trust estate. All of the above designations in favor of Red Feather Development Group may be included in a living trust agreement as well as in a will.

Let us help you -- and thank you!
Whichever of these forms and purposes you choose for your bequest, Red Feather Development Group is able and eager to assist you. We can advise you about how to make a will, plus provide sample bequest language appropriate for the forms and purposes described above. At your request, a representative of Red Feather will be happy to speak with you and, if you wish, with your legal and financial advisors to discuss your goals and refine the wording of your bequest.

When you have completed your will (or added a provision for Red Feather to your present will), we hope you'll let us know and enable us to express our thanks! With your permission, we.ll list your name among the growing number of Sundance Club members, those who have provided for future gifts to Red Feather, to encourage others to take that important step.

Will Power -- It's yours when you write a will and include Red Feather. Your .present. will be a gift that endures far into the future.
