Prospective Volunteers

There are certain details that you should take into consideration before attending a Red Feather Development Group construction project. Most areas of the country that Red Feather conducts its projects have extreme weather conditions. Temperatures range from very hot and dry (100° F) to cold and damp (30° F). During our projects, everything from sleeping and eating to showering is most likely done in the great outdoors. The construction work itself is at times very strenuous and can be dangerous. However, we will do everything possible to make our projects safe and secure for all our volunteers. Please click here for further information on what to expect when attending a Red Feather construction project.

An adult must accompany volunteers between the ages of 10 and 17. Because of liability issues, children under 10 years of age are not allowed to attend.

Red Feather construction projects are generally three to four weeks long. To cover meals, camp facilities and liability insurance during the project, a volunteer fee of $250 per person is required plus an additional $50 per each additional week of attendance. For students and seniors, the fee is $200 plus an additional $50 per each additional week of attendance. All volunteers will be responsible for their own transportation to and from our project site.

Application Process

Step One: Thoroughly review the Red Feather website, including our current Volunteer Opportunities and Volunteer FAQ.

Step Two: Become a member of Red Feather. Memberships can be purchased online, by mail, or by calling (406) 585-7188.

Step Three: If you are a new volunteer, complete and submit a New Volunteer Application. Those who have volunteered previously with Red Feather should complete and submit a Returning Volunteer Application.

Step Four: The Red Feather staff reviews applications. Due to the high interest in our projects and limited space, we cannot accept every applicant.

Step Five: All applicants are informed of their project eligibility. Accepted applicants will receive an informational packet that includes individual expectations, and a list of recommended items to bring to the build (tools, clothes, camping equipment, etc.).

Step Six: Applicants review the informational packet, confirm their intent to participate in the project by submitting their Participation Agreement, and pay their volunteer fee.

Step Seven: Red Feather confirms your participation in the project and sends a map to the project site.

Step Eight: Applicants determine their travel plans.

Step Nine: Participants review Red Feather's book, Building A Straw Bale House: The Red Feather Construction Handbook. The book is recommended reading for every project participant and can be ordered here.

Step Ten: Attend the build!
